An Information Guide to Phuket Town

Although not known as a tourist attraction, Phuket Town has some sites that are worth seeing. It has the largest population on the island and is also the capital of Phuket. The town itself is really a small city and is where many of the locals live and do business. The city is located on the opposite side of the island to the major beach resorts and attractions. This place has its own unique style and is worth having a look at.

If you are tired of the bustle and noise of the crowds of tourists who occupy Phuket's popular seaside resorts, a good choice to end your last minute holidays in Thailand would be a short visit to explore Phuket Town. The town is relatively quiet and laid back in atmosphere, a place where you can relax in the comfort of your own hotel or leisurely explore the few hidden sights and attractions Phuket Town offers the intrepid traveler.

Attractions:
Because most tourists stick to the main attractions, the price of things here are cheaper than what you will find in most other places in Phuket. Some of the attractions that you can see here are Chinatown, and Old Phuket Town, and temples such as Put-Jaw, Jui-Tui and Mongkol Nimit. There is a large hill located to the west of Phuket Town called Khao Rang, which has great views of the town and other areas of Phuket. There are some nice restaurants up here too with fantastic food and lovely views.

Getting Around:
The roads in Phuket Town are very busy during the day and at Peak Hour, the traffic seems to go nowhere fast. There are buses running throughout the day to and from Patong and to other areas for a very low fare, which can be a welcoming change from what you would pay for a Tuk Tuk or taxi in and around Patong.

Places to Eat:
There are many places to eat in Phuket Town with plenty of places serving up cheap Thai food. The town has some western influences too with your usual fast food outlets, but not on the scale of somewhere like Patong. You can get some really good and cheap food here with some of the mobile food vendors that hover around the place.

Shopping:
Phuket Town has many shopping centres, malls and markets with a large weekend market called Jatujak. This market is open from around 3pm till about 9pm and is located to the south of Phuket Town, towards Chalong on Chao Fa West Rd. The market sells mostly clothes and food, but you can find other things here too such as, souvenirs and wood carvings. Prices for things here are mostly much cheaper than what you would find anywhere else in Phuket as the things on sale here are mostly for the Thai's that live and work here.
