Holiday and Info Guide to Patong Beach & Phuket

Phuket is quite a large island and is one of Thailand’s most popular tourist attractions and people travel here in large numbers from all over the world for great holidays. Most of the tourists that visit Phuket come from the UK, Europe, Australia, US, Canada, Russia, Japan and the Middle East. There is also the occasional tourist from other Asian countries, but the numbers are much less.
The main language that is spoken in the touristy areas of Phuket is English, however the Thai people will speak their native language amongst themselves, so if you don’t know either one of these languages, you will have a hard time trying to communicate in Phuket.
Most of the Thai people speak English in any tourist area of Thailand and most are understandable, but some are a little bit hard to understand. Just remember that English is a second language to Thai people and they do pretty well at it for being their second language.

When travelling to Phuket, you will need to prepare for the sun and the hot tropical weather as it is very warm to hot all year long. You won’t need to ever wear a jumper as the weather almost never dips below 20 degrees Celsius – even at night time and the average daytime temperature is 33 degrees Celsius, so it's warm.
Make sure to pack a hat and bring plenty of sun cream with you, as the power of the sun burns very quickly and being sun burnt in this climate could ruin your holiday. Also, bring some aloe vera after sun lotion to help soothe the skin after being out in the sun.
The best way to not get burned in the sun of Phuket is to apply a lot of sun cream before sunbathing or going for a swim and reapplying the sun cream again after you come back out of the water. If you don’t follow this advice, you will end up looking like a prune, which is not a very cool look and worse still, your skin could get permanently damaged.
It’s also a very good idea to not expose you whole body to the sun in the middle of the day. After 3pm is the ideal time to get any sort of exposure to the sun as the sun has lost allot of its power and won’t burn as much. Don’t do what most people from Europe do when they come to Phuket and try to get the darkest tan that they can possibly get, as this can not only prematurely wrinkle your skin like a prune, but you could also end up with skin cancer later on in life. Don’t be a prune, as it is not cool anymore and really does look terrible when a fair skinned person goes around looking like a lobster.

Phuket Info Patong

Phuket has a small international airport which is busy all day and all night long. When arriving in Phuket and checking out of the airport, you will be confronted with many taxi drivers as you leave the exit doors. The taxi drivers will yell out "taxi" in a mad frenzy and it can be not only overwhelming but quiet annoying at the same time. If you have you transport organized, someone will hold up a sign with your name on it and they will wait for you to spot the sign and the sign will most likely be written in English, unless you are staying at a hotel that caters for your language.
If you don’t have transport organized then, you will need to try and negotiate with the taxi drivers. Try to go for the Taxi drivers in uniform and try to get the best price. The taxi drivers will try and rip you of and say a price which is double of what it really is worth, but the average price is around 600 Baht for a taxi ride to Patong Beach and once you mention this to them, they know that you know about what the prices are and will usually agree. Most of the time, the taxi drivers in uniforms will take you to a nearby desk which you then pay for your fare and then the driver will lead you to the taxi. It’s nice to give the driver a small tip of say around 100 to 200 Baht for their services.
Try to stay away from the drivers who aren’t wearing any uniforms as they are usually not a registered taxi driver and are doing it illegally.

Most people are surprised at how far away the touristy areas of Phuket are from the airport. Patong Beach is about 45 to 50 minutes drive away from the airport and places like Karon and Kata are even further away and can take up to an hour or more to get there.

Patong Beach Information

Patong is by far the main tourist area of Phuket and the place is bustling with activity all day and night long. If you were to arrive here for the first time, you would be overwhelmed with all the action that Patong has to offer. During the day time, there are Thai massage ladies who hassle anyone who walks past them for a massage and there are the tailor shop guys who annoy the heck out of unsuspecting tourists for a suit. There are also the tuk tuk drivers who are parked along all the main streets of Patong who will pester the crap out of you, just like the tailor shop guys. Once these people see your face a few more times they will hassle you slightly less, but only just slightly.
Other things that can be annoying about Patong are the vendors down at Patong Beach, they will walk up and down the beach all day long and if you are sitting on a deck chair, you will be approached by the same vendors who will repeatedly ask you if you want to buy a souvenir or a drink or something to eat or even a temporary tattoo. If you sit on a deck chair for a few hours, you would be approached several times by the same people and they are just so persistent.

Another major annoyance on Patong Beach is the jet ski operators. You really need to watch out for these guys if you hire a jet ski, because they organize scams to extort money out of the tourists. It doesn’t matter how many warnings that people put out there on the internet, you will still see many tourists who don’t have a clue about the jet ski scam situation and get caught up in a fake repair scam. If you do legitimately damage a jet ski, you are in just as much trouble as someone who gets caught up in a scam. The repair bill can often go as high as 100,000 Baht and if you don’t pay the repair costs, the operators use intimidation or even violence until they get their way and they will get their way, no matter what.
If you think the tourist police or the Thai police will help, then think again, most of the times, they do nothing and even if they do try to do something about the situation, it is just a show and doesn’t change the end result, which is – YOU LOSE. Oh and the police get a cut out of the repair bill which is an example of how corrupt they are here, so of course they aren’t willing to help out with the situation, they want the situation to happen so they can make some extra cash for the day.

It is OK to parasail at Patong Beach without the worry of getting caught up in a scam, well you can't exactly get blamed for damaging anything while you are up in the air, that's for sure.
Is it safe to parasail at Patong Beach, my guess is as good as anyone's and that is - who knows? I can tell you that there are no safety standards and regulations which help to protect the tourists safety, also the guys who drive the boats, love to steer that parachute into the beach where everyone sits on the deck chairs and most of the time, the parachute just misses all the people who are laying there. The parachute comes in at high speed, so if there was a misjudgement, then there could be some injuries on the beach.

Patong Nightlife

Patong is also where most of the nightlife of Phuket is and it is a paradise for single males of all ages, but in recent times, many single females are starting to come here too.
When walking around Patong of a night, you will see a wild scene and this can take some getting used to at first. The infamous Bangla Road is where it all happens in Patong and there are many other Soi’s and streets around Bangla Road that are also bustling with activity during the night.
The nightlife in Patong is setup for single males and if a single male was to come here by himself or in a group, he would think that this place is like a dream fantasy land for guys, which is exactly what it is.
Pretty Thai bar girls stand out the front of all the bars in Bangla Road and do their best to get the customers to come and drink at their bars. The music that pumps out of these bars is loud and most bars play their own individual music and try to outdo each other. Some of the bigger bars, like Tiger, Lion and Soi Eric, have a resident DJ that plays music for all the bars.
There are many decent sized nightclubs in Patong and these clubs are filled with tourists and Thai women. If you don’t like Asian women before you come to Phuket, then you will soon change your mind when you see how beautiful some of them are.

Patong is unfortunately where most of the lady boys of Phuket like to hang out. They mostly hang around Soi Crocodile and dance on platforms and out in front of their Soi and many of the new tourists that come here are fascinated with wanting to have their photo taken with them. I would give the best advice and warn anyone to stay well clear of the lady boys, as they are known to frequently pick pocket and also get nastily when you don’t pay them to have your photo taken with them, which most tourists think is for free.
The lady boys are also a nuisance and will lurk around Bangla Road until the early hours of the morning - looking for drunk and unsuspecting tourists who are too drunk to tell if they are a lady boy or not.
I find it hard to believe, but there are actually quite a few tourists who come to Thailand to specifically pick up lady boys. I can’t understand it as to me it is very bizarre how any male would want to come to Patong to pick up a man who looks like a woman, especially with all the beautiful - real Thai women that are around. In my opinion, you are better off just going for a woman, who looks like one and is one, I mean, the lady boys really do look like women, as they devote their whole lives to looking like females with various operations and female hormones to keep them looking feminine, but they are faking it.

Patong Shopping Info
There is plenty of shopping in Patong as there are many shops and small stalls which are located all around the place. Most of the stalls that you will see in Patong are tiny little outlets, that sell mostly clothes and shoes and these stalls will have immigrant workers running them who are mostly there illegally from places like Burma, India and Nepal. These stall operators are persistent little pests and I would advise not walking into a complex of these little stalls unless you are serious about buying something, as the owners really do hassle you allot and it gets very annoying very quickly. If you are planning on buying something in one of these stalls or shops, make sure to have a good look around to get an idea of the prices. Also, try to negotiate better prices and go as low as you can, then repeat this with as many shops as you can to get the best price. After doing this for a while, you will work out who has the best prices and you can return to that stall to purchase the goods. Oh and speaking of goods, they are not really goods at all, the things that are sold at these types of stalls are pretty much fake or copied brands which look like the real thing, but are not.
The quality of the items that are sold in these stalls or shops, are of low quality and you will be lied to every time from the shopkeeper – telling you that the items are legit, when in fact, they are not. But having said this, there are some people who just want cheap crap and don’t care how good the quality is.

There are other various shops and shopping complexes and the biggest one in Phuket - is Jungceylon, which is located right in the middle of Patong. Jungceylon is huge and has everything you would want or need in it and there are many shops, food outlets and restaurants, places to get a massage, sports stores and movie cinemas. Almost everything that is sold in Jungceylon, is legit and you can actually walk around in the shopping complex without being hassled, well I should say, not hassled as much.
Jungceylon is mostly setup to cater for tourists and you will find many of the things in the shops that appeal to tourists from western countries.
On the bottom floor to the complex, there are many small shops which sell souvenirs and clothes and there are also many places to get a massage too. There are the usual Thai massage places and they not only offer Thai, oil and foot massages, but some of these massage shops, have fish tanks out the front which have sucker fish in them and you put your feet in them for a foot massage. The fish swarm all over your feet as soon as you put them into the tank and they suck on your feet and this creates a massaging effect. When the fish suck on your feet, it tickles like crazy and is a bit overwhelming at first, but after a few minutes, the tickling eases and your feet feel like they are being stimulated. After your massage with the fish is finished, you take your feet out and they are dried off with a towel and if you look at and feel your skin, it feels new and fresh, truly, no joke.

Although Patong is where most tourists like to holiday, there are many other places in Phuket that are every bit as good as Patong. There are plenty of towns that line the western coast of Phuket and these places have beautiful beaches that are much quieter than Patong. Places such as Karon, Kata, Kata Noi, Kamala and Surin, all have beautiful beaches and there are plenty of hotels and resorts to stay at, which are either beachfront, or very close to the beach.

There are plenty of attractions and things to see and do in Phuket, there are many surrounding islands to explore with Phi Phi Island being the most recognized and popular island. Phi Phi Island is pronounced like this – "Pee Pee" and the island was made popular by the movie – The Beach. The islands around Phi Phi are absolutely stunning and so are the beaches. This tropical paradise is only a short ferry boat or speed boat trip from Phuket.
There is plenty of accommodation on Phi Phi Island and staying here for at least 1 night is a must when visiting the island.

Phuket Information

Many other small islands are only a short distance from Phuket and many daytrips are available and most hotels can organize these trips and you will get picked up from your hotel by a mini bus for the tour.
There a lots of other attractions in Phuket such as, the Big Buddha, Phuket Fantasea, and many temples to explore. There are also many fine lookouts with stunning views over the island and the most famous of these is at the Kata View Point. There is another really good lookout where the Big Buddha is located and this looks over the eastern side of the island towards Phuket Town and Chalong.

Most people who come to Thailand for the first time, want to see some Thai Boxing and there is plenty of that in Phuket. The biggest Thai Boxing stadium is in Patong and this is called Bangla Boxing Stadium. The boxing here is said to be fake or staged and most tourists don’t know this and there is certainly no shortage of people who flock to the stadium to watch a fight. There are plenty of other things to do in Phuket such as – go karting, elephant trekking, white water rafting and firing a shot at a shooting range. There are also many golf courses to choose from in Phuket and some of the courses have luxury resorts which are located right next to them.

Scuba diving is very popular in Phuket and there are many dive schools that are located in all the major tourist areas. The conditions are perfect for diving as the water around Phuket is warm and tropical – all year round. Many tourists who love diving come to Phuket because not only are the waters warm, but the seas are mostly calm and the swell doesn’t get big very often. There are dive trips called liveaboards which are boats which take scuba divers out on a scuba diving experience. These liveaboards can go for days and provide accommodation for the divers for the duration of the trip.

Snorkeling is very popular on the beaches and islands that surround Phuket and the conditions allow for a great snorkel, as the ocean is mostly calm and there are plenty of coral reefs and fish to explore.
Although the waves are usually small in Phuket, there are some beaches that attract bigger swell than other beaches and this is where you will find the occasional surfer, when the swell is right. Places like kata and Kata Noi Beach, get nice little waves for most of the year and Kamala and Surin Beach can also get some good surf from time to time.

The food in Phuket in general is fantastic and I have had some of the tastiest meals in my life here. You don’t have to eat out at any expensive places to get a good meal and some of the cheapest places, can serve up the best meals. The small food stalls and mobile food vendors can serve the cheapest and best meals in Phuket and to find a good one is easy, as all the Thai people will be eating there.
There are many good cheap restaurants in Phuket and as mentioned before, you don’t need to spend big to have a good meal. The restaurants cater for all tourists and you will come across western restaurants, as well as – Middle Eastern, Mexican, Japanese, Chinese and of course, Thai food.
Seafood is very big in Phuket and there are many seafood places which are located all around the island and most of them have fresh seafood and in some cases – live seafood on display. The seafood in Phuket is very cheap when you compare it to any western country and is a seafood lover’s paradise.
So when considering a holiday in Thailand, it's hard to look past Phuket and Patong Beach.
