Go Go Bars in Phuket

Phuket isn't that well known for it's go go bars, but they do exist here. The amount of go go bars in Phuket is much smaller than places such as Pattaya and Bangkok and you wouldn't even know where most of the go go's in Phuket are located, as some of them are small places which are located upstairs amongst many beer bars.

Pretty much all go go bars in Phuket, are located either on, or very close to Bangla Road in the main nightlife area of Patong and the bigger go go bars are pretty well known and hard to miss, as they have huge - lit up signs out the front of them.
The largest and longest running go go bars are the most popular and these are the ones that are recommended to go to, as you are less likely to get scammed into paying ridiculously high drink prices.
All of the go go bars in Thailand have elevated prices for drinks and this is how they make their money, but there are some go go bars in Patong which have prices that are almost beyond belief, even if it was a bar in a western country.

Go Go Bars to Stay Away From
There are numerous reports in many forums about tourists who get scammed into paying drink prices at lesser known bars that are so high, that it's a joke. It should be noted that most of the people who get scammed like this, are either on their own, or there are only a small group of them and this is when you are most vulnerable to get scammed in a dodgy go go bar.
Almost all of them reported the same thing, they went for a stroll into one of the popular soi's and there were dodgy looking touts standing downstairs from an unknown go go bar. The touts stop them and convince them to go upstairs to the go go bar. You go inside and sit down and to watch a show and ask how much for a drink and they don't tell you, so you ask to see a menu. A menu is reluctantly brought to you and you realize that it's 800 Baht for a beer and 1000 Baht for spirits. You immediately get up to walk out, but as soon as you do, a group of Thai men stand in the exit, preventing you from walking out and tell you to sit back down and have a drink. You realize you have been scammed and that you have no way out of it, so you sit back down and order a drink which is around $30 US! You get up to go out once more and you are told to sit down again and you order another $30 drink. After feeling like crap and finally being allowed to leave the place after a few more drinks, you vow to never return again and so many others that got stung that night will do the same.
One would think that places like this would go out of business in no time, but they don't, as there are new tourists that come along everyday and don't have a clue about the place and also get stung.

If you are on your own or you are in a small group in Patong, and you walk past a group of Thai guys who are standing downstairs from an unknown go go bar, then this is a clear warning sign to keep on walking and don't go into that bar. If anything doesn't feel right about going into any bar in Thailand, don't go in to begin with. Stick to the well known go go bars that don't have dodgy male touts standing out the front of them. The bars with women standing out the front that are popular are the ones to go for.
