Thailand Bar Girl Information and Guide

When travelling to any of the hot nightlife spots in Thailand, you will more then likely encounter some bar girls. A bar girl is a girl who is employed to work in a bar to attract and extract as much money as possible out of the customers.
The bars have the girls standing out the front and sometimes standing on the bar dancing around poles, trying to look as sexy as possible while the other girls compete with the bar next door for your business.

Most of the bars that these girls work in, are known as beer bars, but bar girls are known to work in just about any bar in Thailand and you will find them in the places where many of the tourists are known to go to.
If you are a male and you were to walk past any one of these bars, the girls at the bar will try just about anything to get your attention and some will even grab you and not let go until you take a seat at their bar. The girls know all the tricks to get money out of you such as - getting you to play games for drinks which they have mastered and know they will win, plus they charge double for the drinks you buy them, these are known as lady drinks.
When buying a drink for a bar girl, they almost always ask if you can buy one for their friend and try to repeat this as often as possible and when you get your bill with the elevated lady drink prices, it can work out to be an expensive night.

Some bar girls charge full price for a lady drink and pour them self a drink with no alcohol in it so they can make the bar more money. They have all sorts of ways to make money out of drunk and unsuspecting tourists.
The thing that bar girls do best is, they know how to act, the smiles are a show and they often fool first timers into thinking that they are truly interested in them so they can extract more money out of the customer.
If you were to go with a bar girl and you were to be seen with another girl on another night, the bar girl will get very jealous and you will be labelled as a butterfly man, but if she was to go with another man, they don't see this as being a butterfly women, they always say - "But I working."
There have been first timers that have came to Thailand who fall in love with bar girls and foolishly believe that they are interested in them and only them and actually send them money, thinking that they are not working at the bar anymore.
Most bar girls come from the north of Thailand in an area known as Isaan and become bar girls to make easy money and often travel to areas like - Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket and Koh Samui.
The girls will often pretend that they are really poor and their families are starving or that one of their family members are really sick in hospital and need an operation and they use these same lies to fool first timers to Thailand into feeling sorry for them so they will spend money on them.
Watch out not to be fooled by the birthday trick. Bar girls have been known to pretend that its their birthday to try and get you to spend more on them and have multiple birthdays in one year.
The bar girls often have many boyfriends from all around the world sending money over to them every week after they have made up some lame story about having no money, don't ever fall for this.
Some of the girls who work in these bars are actually poor and really do need to work in the bar to support their families, but you have no way of telling any of this as they lie compulsively all the time.
When a bar girl tells you that she has to pay rent and she lives by herself, this is almost always another lie, as most bar girls share cheap rooms with other girls and its not uncommon for 5 or 6 girls to be all staying together in the one room.
There is a saying amongst expats who know bar girls pretty well and its - As soon as a bar girl opens her mouth, she's lying. And that pretty well sums most of them up. By all means, have fun with bar girls, just watch your money closely.
